When fifteen years later The Maestro performed Verdi’s Requiem with LA Phil and LA Master Chorale in Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (soloists included soprano Renata Scotto), his tempos were a touch slower, but his emotional intensity and expressiveness were virtually the same as in this video.
An interesting little serendipitous coincidence: just today i encountered a very positive mention of that same performance – Verdi’s Requiem by LA Phil with Scotto under Giulini – on page 226 of Jamie Bernstein’s book.
Thanks for your recommendation: the book is certainly an entertaining read. Its “jaw-dropping honesty” (as described by John Guare) may sometimes have TMI feel, but the gentle humor helps and i think it is quite well written overall. I still have over a hundred pages to go.
Lenny Bernstein has nothing on this 🙂

Are you enjoying the book? As you know, I did.

Definitely TMI but forgivable.
