Was the composer himself conducting them as the photo seems to show? From the videos of his conducting that i have seen before, i never suspected him of being particularly swinging, but in this recording their playing is so jazzy at times that i was easily imagining it being conducted by someone like Leonard Bernstein who could definitely move his entire body on the podium in a swinging style with the best of them (which these guys – surely no gals among them – certainly were!).
I have most of Benny Goodman’s classical works but have been unable to find any available recordings of Woody Herman’s.
Any directions of where to find?
This is interesting and in marked contrast to Goodman’s version.
There are CDs available of Woody Herman and his band playing the Stravinsky (written for them), but I don’t know of any other classical recordings that they did.

Yes, it’s Stravinsky conducting, in the late 1940s.
