“I can’t be the only listener who thinks that Bach’s harpsichord concerti are never wholly satisfying when performed on the modern grand piano. The combination of piano and strings in this repertoire is murky and muscular, whereas the music requires a clean and separate definition of the contrapuntal lines and agile movement.”
Yeah, that’s why I like Vladimir Golschmann’s recordings of the keyboard concertos to Bernstein’s. Golschmann has a more baroque feel to me, Bernstein a bit too “lush.”
