The little fellow in the front, paying no attention to the musical goings on, is me (Tim).
Someone, don’t know who, has written “Wagnerian Camera Mugger” on the photo, apparently in reference to me.
The photo was taken c. summer, 1961, in our home.
I suspect it is a photo taken by our local newspaper. My mother ran an amateur Broadway troupe called “The Coronaires” (we lived in Corona, CA). I grew up around productions of “South Pacific,” “The Music Man,” “Pajama Game,” “Oklahoma!” and many others.
No, we didn’t stand around singing like this, not to my recollection. But all of us, at one time or another, appeared in my mother’s musical productions, in parts big and small. My father once sang the role of Emile de Becque in “South Pacific.” My mother always conducted the orchestra.
Mom and Dad had different musical tastes. You will see this in the photo. Behind my father on the floor is a “Party Along with Mitch [Miller]” record — that’s his. On the mantle is a recording of “La Traviata” — that’s Mom’s.
Dad is wearing a bow tie. He got into the habit in medical school, when he found his long ties dangled inside the cadavers they were studying.
Above the piano is a painting by one of my aunts, I believe. The piano is a Chickering, and we still have it.

I LOVE it!!! What a great photo. Your stories are wonderful. The youngest is always the one who walks to the beat of his own drummer. (Or something like that. I’ve never been good with cliches. Sorry.)
Do you die your hair? Looks like you were once blonde 🙂
Yes, I was a blond. It darkened as I got older. Now it’s getting lighter (whiter) again.
Are there any photos of you meeting Ike??
Unfortunately, no. But incidentally, see those encyclopedias behind my father on the shelf? We took the “E” volume for Ike to sign when we met him — he was delighted, and signed his name on the first page of his entry. I have that volume on the shelf here at the ranch.
Loved both kinds of music.
Ah. . . now it is clear why you became a music critic (when you’re not commenting on the Pop world in the OC Register). It is amazing how one’s life’s direction can be set at such an early age! Just kidding!!!
The little fellow in the front, paying no attention to the musical goings on, is me (Tim).
Ahhh, you were so cute! What happened?! 😉
By the way, at this moment I’m listening to a recording of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from their season premiere in October 2010. I’m switching back and forth between that and a concert performed recently in Carnegie Hall. I’ve heard some people claim the latter has such wonderful acoustics. Huh?!
The reason many musicians “claim” that Carnegie Hall has wonderful acoustics is simple – Carnegie Hall has wonderful acoustics. But some may prefer acoustics in the Walt Disney Concert Hall because its acoustics are different but wonderful too.
In the picture, Tim is thinking: “OMG, they are so out of tune! I should write a scathing review and do it fast – the dreaded deadline is just minutes away!”
I hesitate to get into another discussion about acoustics — we’ve been there before — and perhaps this post is not the place. However, yes, Carnegie Hall has incredible acoustics. What’s more, recordings don’t necessarily capture the acoustics of a hall accurately or naturally.
My mother is the real singer in our family, but unfortunately, as you can see in this photo, she’s not singing. The idyllic scene captured here was probably closer to caterwauling than anything else, or, what amounts to the same thing, American Idol.
Great Photo Tim! You’re always entertaining.
Awesome picture, and fun stories to go with it.
If your dad was Emile de Becque, did you and/or or siblings get to play the de Becque children and sing “Dites-moi?” It would have been pretty awesome watching blonde-headed kids portraying Polynesians.
No, to the best of my memory, none of the siblings played de Becque children in that one … but I’ll have to ask them to be sure.
Did Dr. Mangan ever play the lord high executioner in The Mikado?
Perhaps. Not sure. That would have been before I remembered anything.
