Bernard Herrmann’s film score for Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” is one of the best ever written, an integral part of the film. This week the Pacific Symphony will perform it live in sync with a screening of the movie, in a new print from which the musical soundtrack has been removed.
A couple of years ago I spoke with John Goberman, the man behind the making of these music-less prints, and conductor Richard Kaufman, who conducts them around the world and who will lead the current “Vertigo.” They were involved in a live “Singin’ in the Rain” then, but most of what they said applies equally to “Vertigo.” Here’s how it’s done:
