Very Schumannesque. A good symphony, not great. I found the finale the weakest. Some good things in it, an enjoyable listen and worthy of more performances but a bit forgettable.
The composer was a friend and colleague of Mendelssohn and Schumann. He conducted the premiere of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. I agree, it’s a good not great symphony and the finale is the weakest. I do think it could be helped by a better performance, though, and we might raise our estimation a little.
