Wow: “the timing of the reading, at 57 minutes, was a little on the long side”. A little??!! Most recordings are between 50 and 53 minutes. There is one available on YouTube that Sir Georg managed to complete in under 45! That is rather extreme, but i have never seen or heard any — either recorded or live — that exceed 55 minutes, so 57 is really extremely slow. If it did not feel that way, the performance may have been even more extraordinarily wonderful than you thought!
My sense was that no one section was extremely slow, but a good portion of it was medium slow. The opening and closing sections were perhaps the slowest, but atmospherically so.
