The Los Angeles Philharmonic will present a tribute concert to the late Steven Stucky, the orchestra’s former composer-in-residence and consultant on new music. He died in February of brain cancer at age 66. A steady presence in the life of the Philharmonic for more than two decades, Stucky won a Pulitzer Prize for his Second Concerto for Orchestra, written for the LA Phil.
Conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen will lead The Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group in the concert on April 20 at Disney Concert Hall. Pianist Gloria Cheng, from Piano Spheres, the Lyris Quartet, from Jacaranda, and soprano Hila Plitmann will also participate. Salonen as well as composers James Matheson, Anders Hillborg, Mandy Fang and Joseph Phibbs will compose short works for solo piano to be played throughout the concert. The Philharmonic said that other composers will be announced.
The program will include Stucky’s “Album Leaves,” “Nell’ombra, nella luce” and “Boston Fancies.” Lutoslawski’s “Chantefleurs et chantefables” is also on the program.
The concert is free. Complimentary tickets can be reserved by calling 323-850-2000.
