I’ve noticed a reduction over the past few years in the number of traveling orchestras (from both the US and abroad) at major presenting venues like Carnegie Hall and an almost a total elimination of that type of programming under the auspices of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at their downtown LA home. I wonder how much of that is due to a sagging economy, changing tastes (or a desire to lessen competition for the audience’s dollars) or other things?
For those of us who value quality over quantity, the choices of visiting orchestras at Carnegie Hall are still highly impressive. At the home of LA Phil, there were never very many guest orchestras performing, but the two concerts scheduled for this fall, one of which is by Berlin Phil with Sir Simon, are not too shabby at all.
