Nicely orchestrated. Wouldn’t challenge even the most sensitive of ears but, in my opinion, it’s ultimately forgettable.
By the way, will any American symphonies be included in your survey?
I think it’s ultimately charming and elegant, and that we’ve been taught that a 20th century symphony has to be gritty and serious. Yes, there will be American symphonies at some point, I’m sure.
Agreed that not all 20th century symphonies need to be gritty and serious. There’s plenty that aren’t, of course. This one though was just a bit too shallow for my taste.
Perfect, Chris thanks. Glad to know we are on the same page aesthetically. Tastes will always differ. For me the piece works wonderfully. But I can see how others might find it too slender. Although the references to Prokofiev’s Classical symphony give it a certain sophistication I think.
There’s also a hint of Hindemith at the end of the second Mvt.
