Weird piece. For being only 20 minutes, I don’t think it holds together very well. I really liked the opening third of it. Sounded at times like Lutoslawski’s music that he wrote in the 60s (same decade as this one) but then it seemed to lose course and go back in time harmonically. In fact, I thought the section starting around 14:00 sounded a lot like Sinfonia Antartica.
I think the last part could work in a better performance.
Stylistically this seems a bit of a thin melange. The first part is the most palatable; the remainder seemed to be to cruise along on octatonic autopilot. The bombastic coda felt tacked on. I liked the orchestration mostly, but i don’t feel the wonderfully tense and hushed mystery of the first minutes were well served by the rest of the piece. All the same, i had never heard of this composer, and will be exploring his other works. In places here, there is a beautiful spark. The man could compose! But – all that octatonia. Yikes.
