Yo-Yo Ma performs Gershwin’s Prelude No. 1 on Monday with the help of Late Show house pianist Jon Batiste. This performance didn’t actually air (another one did), but was instead a “web exclusive.”
It sounds like they could have rehearsed this another half a dozen times, but let’s hope it at least signals the return of classical music to late night television.
As one who remembers back when Horowitz and Rubinstein were household names, and guys like Horacio Gutierrez were booked on Johnny Carson, it is very good to see classical music – and ballet – treated like part of mainstream culture again, and not some hoity-toity ratings killer.
