One of my favorite symphonies and one of the greatest and most enigmatic symphonic farewells ever. I’ve heard many recordings of it but not this one. I listened only to the first mvt and the end. The first movement was pretty sloppy and gave me the feeling it was about to spin completely out of control. The ending was more successful.
Personally, I like the Sanderling/Cleveland and Haitink/Concertgebouw performances much better. Still remember an amazing performance in the 80s with Sanderling and the LA Phil.
Yes, it certainly is a wonderful work. Still, my favorites remain the same: the Tenth and the Fourteenth.
It’s really hard for me to pick my favorite Shostakovich symphonies. When they are performed well, so many of them are wonderful. 10 certainly. 14 may be too relentlessly dour for my taste. 5, 6 and 9 are also favorites, the last terribly underrated in my opinion.
