Thank you. Has any SoCal orchestra ever programmed this to your knowledge?
They must have, but I don’t have specifics. It is rare. UCLA’s Philharmonia orchestra is playing it in October, I’m happy to say.
This was the recording I had on LP and first learned to love this symphony. Dutoit’s recording is also fine but the advantage is clearly with Karajan and the Berliners. I’ve never heard it live but am also happy to see UCLA doing it this fall.
I’ve always loved his music from the symphonies(he’s really one of the best composers of 20 century symphonies) to his symphonic movements, (Pacific 231, Rugby, Pastorale d’ete), to his oratorios( King David, Jeanne d’Arc, Danse des Morts). I know he was really popular in the 30s, 40s and early 50s. He was raved about by people like Virgil Thomson. I wonder why he has fallen from favor?
