This movement is full of passages that are in unison but three octaves apart, which seems to me like a rather lazy way of composing a double concerto. To be fair though, it certainly is not easy to write well for these two instruments playing together. This bassist is quite amazing, and i could not miss an opportunity to hear ASM once again because i believe that in recordings she is the finest living violinist. So thank you Tim!
Who is the finest living violinist in live performance?
Between late 1970s and around 2010 i had a definite answer. But these days i can’t tell because there are several outstanding players who impress me greatly but i have not heard all of them enough in live performances to determine whom i would designate as number one among them. By the way, ASM would be somewhere near the top of that list, because in live performances she is still nearly as superb as in the recordings.
In your opinion, is Leonidas Kavakos one of those several outstanding players?
It is a close call because he is certainly a very good violinist, but my answer should probably be negative because there are about a handful of others whose playing in this century i have been enjoying to a slightly greater degree and with a little bit more consistency.
