Speaking of non-OC opera companies, the San Diego Opera seems to be taking a step toward becoming more like Long Beach. They’ve just hired David Bennett of NYC’s Gotham Chamber Opera (http://goo.gl/C0EJWC), and while he’s committed to continuing grand opera at SDO, he also wants to do more off-the-beaten path stuff (Martinu, Saariaho) like GCO does: http://goo.gl/oGrDvU
And speaking of Martinu, starting tomorrow SD’s Ken Cinema (also at South Coast Village in OC) is showing “Ballet 422,” a behind-the-scenes documentary by Jody Lee Lipes of the New York City Ballet’s staging of “Paz de la Jolla,” Justin Peck’s choreography of Bohuslav Martinu’s 1950 “Sinfonietta la Jolla.” Be there …
