This is somewhat disappointing because it is too straight-forward for my taste: many opportunities for elegance and charm are missed, particularly in th middle part of the piece; the last two minutes on the other hand are too measured and restrained – therefore not nearly crazy enough. However, seeing a “left-handed” violinist in an orchestra (at about 9:25 here) is always fun! Thank you Tim for posting so many interesting recordings.
Sorry for my tardy reply to this. One of the best things about this orchestra and this conductor are pretty much missing from this video, with its poor sound quality. Together they made a series of still impressive recordings for Decca, impressive both for the warm and clear fidelity of the records and for the sound of the orchestra itself, which was “French.”
