For all of you who heard Thierry Fischer lead the Pacific Symphony in a fantastic performance of orchestral excerpts from Berlioz’s “Romeo and Juliet” last night, here’s some music he left out: the “Queen Mab” scherzo. It doesn’t serve the plot that much (that’s why Fischer left it out, I presume), but it is the most famous piece from the score, and brilliant to boot.
The sound in this recording is far from perfect – at least on my computer – but the quality of the performance is marvelous. This great orchestra plays brilliantly here and the interpretation by the wonderful late Colin Davis is superb. Thank you, Tim!
You’re welcome, MarK, I’m glad you liked it. For me, Colin Davis is unbeatable in Berlioz, no matter which orchestra he conducts.
Unfortunately for me, i never had the pleasure of experiencing his musicianship live and in person, but judging by several recordings that i have heard, i would have to agree with you.
