Tim, I realize this is very old, but your review of the Britten opera was excellent “gem-like” actually. I especially love this:
“Britten’s music for it fascinates. It is fragmented and mercurial, multilayered yet perfectly clear. In “Billy Budd,” the composer gives us a teeming simultaneity, presenting more than one musical idea at once, often of differing expression but that fit together in a jagged jigsaw. We hear sea shanties and fanfares, but as if through a prism. We hear the excitement of the sailors as they go into battle, formal declarations, private conversations and even soliloquies, all given their own kinds of utterance. The music is split screen, too.”
“teeming simultaneity”
Nicely done!!!

That and your many “scores” of writing experience, heh
