As usual, a very informative, knowledgeable, fair and well-written review.
As i may have mentioned before, i do not think that clapping between movements should always be verboten. In my opinion, it depends on the character of the movements. The description of the violinist’s playing made me think it was Sarah Chang in disguise.
She reminded me VERY MUCH of Sarah Chang, MarK, even in the way she moved when she was playing, and I thought of that during the concert.
I agree with you about clapping between movements. Last night, though, there was even clapping after the slow movement in the Saint-Saens … not a good place for it.
It seems like every orchestra is bringing in a young, always foreign male conductor to revitalize the orchestra. Did this start with Dudamel?
Also, do you know what Yang played for her encore (I went Saturday)? In my opinion, it was the best part of the night.
Well, there have always been young conductors. People forget, for instance, that Zubin Mehta was 26 or 27 when appointed music director of the L.A. Phil. Maybe there are more them now, I don’t know.
Yang didn’t play an encore the night I attended. Perhaps someone else knows the encore she played Saturday?
