What is even more mind-boggling is the fact that practically every one of the other 23 caprices that he recorded (and many other Paganini pieces) sound just as phenomenal. In my opinion, Ricci is probably the greatest Paganini performer ever because i am quite sure that the composer himself was not able to play his stuff with that degree of precision and virtuosity. And certainly no one else could ever approach this level of devilish brilliance.
A virtuoso’s virtuoso! Did you know he lives in Palm Springs?
I did, Julie. I’ve thought about trying to visit him. My old girlfriend studied with him. My son (a violinist) thinks he’s pretty darn great.
