Here are the goods. She’s playing “It ain’t necessarily so” from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, as arranged by Jascha Heifetz. (Thanks, MarK.) The pianist is none other than Andre Previn, Ms. Mutter’s former husband.

You are welcome, but the title of course is “It ain’t necessarily so”.
Thanks.
Watched it on Tivo this morning. What the YouTube footage doesn’t show is that before he gets to the actual introduction, Dave spent two or three minutes playing with the CD box set packaging. It got a bit of a chuckle out of ASM, but would have preferred to see him use the time to chat with her, even briefly.
That said, that’s some rather different packaging. Very Ikea like.
You think Dave would have done the same with a complete set of Springsteen or The Stones? I bet he wouldn’t have. But since it’s high-falutin’ classical music, he has to show it up, make fun of it. He didn’t even bother to learn to pronounce her name correctly.
As for your reminder of Mutter being on Letterman, Thanks A Lot!
What a waste of time for those of us who care for “classical” music and stayed up to watch and hear she and Previn perform together. Not to mention time wasted for she and Previn, who had to put up with Letterman’s time-stealing antics re the packaging of a set of her CDs. They performed It Ain’t Necessarily So, from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. It lasted several minutes and didn’t seem Necessary.
They were professional at all times, forging dutifully ahead, and played beautifully, but, as I said, what a waste of time.
And I doubt they sold many packages of those CDs from their performance either. She looked good,of course, and Previn played good and looked, well, older. Letterman looked, well, unprepared …as how to fill a three minute segment. At least Paul and the Back-Up band didn’t send them off with something zippy. Small favors.
While not a good night for classical music, what should we have expected?
However, I’m glad I supported the music… by hating every commercial moment of it.
