“More than twenty-five years after its premiere, Philip Glass’s Akhnaten finally made its way to the West Coast…”
Actually not! The West Coast premier was very likely Oakland Opera Theater’s 2004 production. See my blog posting about it: http://irontongue.blogspot.com/2011/03/no-long-beach-operas-production-was-not.html
Very interesting, Lisa, thanks. It’s the last time I’ll believe anything Long Beach Opera tells me. Funny thing is that Glass was in town for the festival … you would have thought he might have corrected the claim.
So it turns out that you and I should have read the whole press packet. 😉
LBO tells me that they know of the OOT performance and carefully phrased their comments: “West Coast premiere of the fully orchestrated and fully staged (with large chorus and dancers) version.”
I guess that OOT’s was reduced in some way! They did perform in a tiny, tiny theater.
I have sent a correction to Opera News.
