Since the San Francisco Symphony is celebrating its centennial in 2012 with a visit to the Bay Area by the bands of Cleveland, Chicago and New York (and relatively nearby LA too), I’m guessing those groups are trying to spread around the cost of traveling to the West Coast. The other orchestra that also will be flying in to salute the SFS’s 100th is the Boston Symphony. But I guess they’re not attempting to offset the expense of a trip to California.
I wonder if any of these orchestras, in turn, will try to maximize the return on such a booking by also playing in LA, Palm Springs or San Diego?
