The third movement of the Piano Concerto No. 1, with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (piano), Carlo Maria Giulini (conductor) and the Vienna Symphony. 1979.
The source is a video tape, so the sound and picture aren’t perfect, but the performance is worth sharing.
Looks like ABM is human after all – imperfections creep in. Unfortunately, our beloved CMG was not a great accompanist – he often had trouble adjusting to someone else’s interpretation. Here i have a feeling that the tempo is a compromise that is a bit too fast for the conductor and a bit too slow for the pianist, so that neither one is completely satisfied. As a result, i as a listener do not feel the joy in the performance, and this movement without joy is not what it should be.
Well, I still think there’s a lot to recommend about this performance. Hmmm, I like what Giulini is doing with the orchestra, though I agree, it doesn’t sound like his typical Beethoven manner. And as for ABM, I’ll have to listen more closely for the imperfections — I was more dazzled by what he WAS doing with the inflections.
