In rhythmical terms this was surprisingly shaky. His sound was never particularly interesting and there were few colors in his palette. He always impressed me as a very good pianist but not as great as many of his admirers claimed. However, his powerful musical intellect and intensity of his interpretations certainly helped him to often be a formidable artist in live performances.
